Uzbekistan’s newly appointed ambassador to Afghanistan, Oibek Usmanov, has officially begun his mission, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two neighboring nations. On Wednesday, Usmanov presented a copy of his credentials to Afghanistan’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amir Khan Muttaqi, during a formal meeting in Kabul.
Muttaqi welcomed the envoy and assured him of full cooperation
from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on all relevant matters. He highlighted the growing collaboration between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, emphasizing that both countries now have operational embassies in each other’s capitals. According to Muttaqi, this development symbolizes the progress being made in fostering bilateral relations.
During their discussion, Muttaqi called for practical steps to advance major economic projects that could benefit both nations. He stressed the importance of leveraging the strong ties between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan to implement initiatives that promote regional connectivity and development.
Ambassador Usmanov, on his part, described the relationship between the two countries as “brotherly” and pledged to work towards further enhancing these ties during his tenure. He emphasized that regular exchanges of delegations between the two nations demonstrate the existing close relationship and a shared commitment to collaboration.
“Relations between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan are deeply rooted, and we will continue to strengthen this partnership in various sectors, especially economic cooperation,” said Usmanov.
The meeting also underscored Uzbekistan’s active engagement with Afghanistan despite the latter’s unique political situation. Although no country has officially recognized the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) as the government, several regional nations, including Uzbekistan, have taken steps to maintain diplomatic missions. This approach signifies a pragmatic stance aimed at fostering regional stability and economic growth.
Uzbekistan’s ongoing support for Afghanistan in terms of trade, energy projects, and infrastructure development further reflects the importance both countries place on their relationship. The ambassador’s appointment is expected to pave the way for more collaborative efforts, with mutual benefits in sight for both nations.
As diplomatic channels strengthen, both Afghanistan and Uzbekistan aim to focus on practical cooperation that addresses economic challenges and promotes peace and prosperity in the region.
