The Afghan Power Supply Company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), recently announced the restoration of electricity imports after major disruptions from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. These interruptions had left several regions without power, sparking public frustration over the inconsistent energy supply.
The disruptions occurred due to technical issues on the Uzbek side and hurricane-related complications in Turkmenistan. Uzbek authorities confirmed that repair efforts were underway, and by December 15, DABS announced the resolution of the issues. Normal electricity supply from both countries was fully restored.
Afghanistan heavily depends on electricity imports from neighboring nations, particularly Uzbekistan. Earlier this year, Uzbekistan extended its electricity export contract to Afghanistan, highlighting their strong energy partnership.
Additionally, Afghanistan has invited Uzbekistan to invest in its natural resources, including oil, gas, and copper reserves in Ghazni and Herat provinces. The proposal also includes opportunities to establish mineral processing plants, further strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
This incident underscores the critical role of regional energy cooperation in maintaining stability in Afghanistan’s power supply.
