In a significant step toward enhancing regional energy cooperation, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan have signed a protocol following a trilateral meeting in Astana. The protocol marks a crucial milestone in their shared initiative to develop and connect their energy networks. This development, reported by Trend through the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy, reflects the countries’ commitment to advancing the green energy corridor that links Azerbaijan, Central Asia, and Europe.
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan Agreement
The trilateral meeting provided a platform to review the progress made in the development of this energy corridor. Key accomplishments include the agreement on a draft Strategic Partnership Agreement aimed at the development and transfer of green energy between the three nations. Additionally, the Terms of Reference for the initial feasibility study were approved, with the Italian company CESI selected to carry out this critical assessment.
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy highlighted the agreement to establish a joint venture involving the national energy companies from all participating countries. This joint venture is expected to play a pivotal role in the successful implementation of the energy network project.
Earlier this year, on May 1, during the Tashkent International Investment Forum, the energy ministers of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of cooperation. This memorandum laid the groundwork for the interconnection of their energy systems. The objective of the memorandum is to define the fundamental conditions for this cooperation, focusing on integrating the energy systems of the three republics.
The signed memorandum outlines plans to explore the feasibility of connecting these energy systems by laying a high-voltage cable along the Caspian Sea bed and potentially extending it to other regions. This approach aims to optimize the trade of green energy from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable energy exchange across the region.
As the project progresses, these countries are expected to continue their collaborative efforts to overcome challenges and leverage opportunities in the green energy sector. The establishment of a cohesive energy network will not only benefit the participating nations but also contribute to the broader goal of promoting sustainable energy practices in Central Asia and beyond.
