Kazakhstan Pushes for Regional Gas Projects to Boost Cooperation

Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister proposes new gas projects to enhance regional cooperation, addressing energy supply challenges and promoting low-carbon initiatives.

Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, Almasadam Satkaliyev, has announced the country’s initiative to implement global gas projects in collaboration with regional nations. This announcement came during the first meeting of the Energy Ministers of the Central Asian states and the Deputy Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan held in Astana today.

“Currently, Kazakhstan is beginning to implement a global project in the field of developing and transmitting ‘green’ energy with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. We are also actively discussing the construction of the large-scale Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant (HPP) with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan,” Satkaliyev stated.

Regional Cooperation in the Gas Sector

Satkaliyev emphasized the importance of extending similar collaborative efforts to the gas sector, highlighting the potential benefits for all involved countries. “In this regard, I propose considering the possibility of implementing similar projects with the countries of the region, particularly in the gas sector,” he explained.

The Kazakh Minister pointed out the immense potential for enhancing energy cooperation and strengthening existing ties between the Central Asian nations. He underscored the pressing challenges currently facing these countries, including global disruptions in the stability of energy resource supplies, fluctuations in oil and gas prices, and other significant factors.

“To ensure the reliability of energy supplies, it’s necessary to develop mechanisms for forecasting and managing these challenges, as well as strengthening cooperation between our countries,” Satkaliyev suggested. He advocated for a collective approach to overcoming these obstacles, emphasizing the need for shared strategies and solutions.

Satkaliyev also called on his colleagues to intensify their efforts to strengthen cooperation by expanding opportunities for energy resource trade. He highlighted the importance of developing low-carbon initiatives, achieving carbon neutrality, and facilitating a phased energy transition. These efforts, he argued, would not only address current challenges but also pave the way for a more sustainable and secure energy future for the region.

The meeting concluded with the energy ministers of the Central Asian countries signing a communiqué. This document is expected to lay the foundation for further successful cooperation in all key areas between the countries, setting the stage for more integrated and effective regional energy policies.

The event, chaired by Satkaliyev, featured speeches from the energy ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Their contributions underscored the shared commitment to regional cooperation and the collective determination to address common energy challenges through innovative and collaborative solutions.
