Announcing the launch, the Switzerland-based company highlighted that Proton Wallet aims to simplify Bitcoin adoption for newcomers and facilitate its use as a payment method beyond centralized institutions’ control.
Proton has incorporated end-to-end encryption into Proton Mail, ensuring secure email communications. The new Bitcoin wallet, accessible through Proton Visionary plans, features Bitcoin via Email with added security from Proton Sentinel.
Founded in 2014 by scientists from the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Proton has grown its encrypted email service to over 100 million users.
Proton’s Endorsement of Bitcoin Proton has long supported Bitcoin, accepting payments and donations in the cryptocurrency. The company emphasized financial freedom during a critical period when PayPal temporarily froze its initial crowdfunding funds.
The company has also outlined a Bitcoin treasury policy, indicating its holdings of Bitcoin as part of its financial reserves. The launch of Proton Wallet marks a significant step in advancing user financial freedom.
Currently in early access, Proton Wallet is available on the web, Android, and iOS for Proton Visionary plan users. This plan is open for a limited time, allowing early access users to invite up to ten friends, with a waiting list for others.
