The Maxwell Football Club (MFC), known for prestigious awards like the Maxwell, Chuck Bednarik, and George Munger awards, proudly introduces the HBCU Contributions to Football Award. This new accolade will be presented annually to an outstanding contributor from a historically black college, athletic department, football program, or conference.
HBCU football has a storied history dating back to December 27, 1892, when Biddle College faced Livingstone College in the first game. Today, 21 HBCU football programs compete at the FCS level, primarily in the MEAC and SWAC conferences. Additionally, North Carolina A&T, Hampton University, and Tennessee State play in non-HBCU conferences. Division II HBCU teams compete in the CIAA and SIAC conferences. The 2024 HBCU football season kicks off with the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge on August 24th and concludes with the Cricket Celebration Bowl on December 14th.
Mark Wolpert, Executive Director of the Maxwell Football Club, stated, “Recognizing excellence and amplifying the contributions of HBCU football aligns with our mission. HBCU institutions have a rich legacy of providing opportunities for student-athletes for over 130 years. We’re honored to highlight the players, coaches, and administrators who have built this tremendous legacy.”
John Grant, Executive Director of ESPN Events, added, “The Maxwell Football Club’s HBCU Contribution to Football Award celebrates the significant impact of individuals from Historically Black Colleges and Universities on college football. This award honors their achievements and the rich history and talent that have shaped the sport.”
The first HBCU Contributions to Football Award will be presented on March 14, 2025, at the 88th Maxwell Awards, held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
